There are plenty of things to do here on the Isle of Wight in autumn. With over half our countryside recognised as an Isle of Wight National Landscape (formerly known as Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) and the whole Island, including our waters, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, there’s something for everyone as autumn brings a spectacular show of colour to the Island.
Thanks to our unique micro-climate with higher-than-average temperatures and more hours of sunshine, autumn is a great time to visit. Think fewer crowds but still plenty to do…

Crisp, clear days in autumn are made for getting out and about. With over 500 miles of pathways, including 68 miles of coastal paths, there’s always a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. Whether on foot or by bike, bright autumn days are perfect for exploring.
For a woodland adventure, take in the beauty of the changing colours in the forests. Known as Bicycle Island, the Island is fully geared up for those travelling on two wheels. You can bring your bike or rent one locally, including electric bikes for the hills! There are routes for all levels, from off-road bridleways to purpose-made tracks along former railway lines. The Isle of Wight offers plenty of family-friendly adventures during the autumn months, with many attractions hosting themed nights throughout October and into November, including the October half term. Pick your own pumpkin from Tapnell Farm, experience excitement at Fiesta of the Dead at Blackgang Chine or walk to your hearts content in the Isle of Wight Walking Festival.

Top spots to watch magic unfold across the sky inlcude Gurnard Beach, Colwell Bay, Totland Beach, Headon Warren, Yarmouth, across the harbour from The Terrace Restuarant, or from the Pepperpot in Chale. With sunset arriving earlier in autumn, there’s plenty of time to then enjoy the clear, starry skies.

There’s plenty of wildlife to spot on the Island in Autumn. If you’re lucky, you might even spot one of the locals - a red squirrel! Some of the best spots to spot them include Borthwood Copse in Sandown, Parkhurst Forest in Newport and Brighstone Forest, the Island’s largest woodland. Autumn is also prime bird migration season. Pack your binoculars and a flask of tea and head to Newtown National Nature Reserve and see what you find.
If you encounter a rainy day, the Isle of Wight offers plenty of indoor autumn activities for kids and toddlers. Family-friendly attractions and activities include the Isle of Wight Bus and Coach Museum, Dinosaur Isle, Tapnell Farm, Brading Roman Villa, Amazon World, JR Zone, Fort Victoria with its Reptilarium and Butterfly World, to name but a few.

Whether you’re traveling by car, foot, or bike, getting to the Isle of Wight is easy via Lymington, Southampton, Southsea, or Portsmouth.
