Spending a sustainable holiday on the Isle of Wight, or anywhere else, involves making conscious choices to minimise your environmental impact. Here are ten tips to help you have an eco-friendly and green holiday on the Isle of Wight.
Use public transportation, like buses, trains, and travel over as a foot passenger on the ferries or Hovercraft, to explore the Island. Alternatively, rent bicycles or scooters to enjoy a more environmentally friendly way of getting around.
Opt for eco-friendly accommodation that has implemented energy-saving practices, waste reduction, and water conservation efforts. Look for the Isle of Wight Green Tourism Award accreditation or check their sustainability policies.
Bring a reusable water bottle, shopping bag, and travel mug. Minimize single-use plastic consumption by avoiding plastic cutlery and containers. Eco-friendly toiletries, such as shampoo bars, are a great way to reduce your footprint.
You could even support an Island business before you arrive by purchasing a natural deodorant from Earth Conscious, or get your holiday t-shirts from Rapanui, an island base carbon-neutral clothing company whose recycled cotton t-shirts are made in a state-of-the-art wind-powered factory.
Use local businesses and restaurants that prioritise locally sourced and organic produce. This supports the local economy and reduces the carbon footprint of your meals.
The Isle of Wight is home to diverse wildlife. Adhere to wildlife protection guidelines, such as not disturbing nesting birds, and other animals, and staying on designated trails to avoid damaging sensitive habitats.
Practice the three Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Minimize waste by choosing products with minimal packaging and properly sorting your waste into recycling and compost bins.
Conserve energy and water by turning off lights, appliances, and taps when not in use. Take shorter showers and report any water leaks in your accommodation. Open a window rather than use air conditioning unit if you’re too hot – and close the window if you need to warm up a little.
Participate in outdoor activities that don't harm the environment, such as hiking, birdwatching, beach cleanups, and exploring local nature reserves.
Purchase souvenirs that are locally made, sustainable, and support local artisans.
Learn about the Isle of Wight's natural and cultural history. Share your newfound knowledge with others and encourage them to adopt sustainable practices as well.
By following these tips, you can enjoy a memorable and environmentally conscious holiday on the beautiful Isle of Wight.
