Chess takes centre stage on the Isle of Wight between the 18th and the 23rd February 2025 when the Wightlink Isle of Wight Chess Tournament takes place in Ryde.
Elite chess players
There will be over 200 individual players in this elite-level competition. Headlining the event are some of the UK’s brightest chess stars, including prodigy Shreyas Royal, Grandmasters Daniel Fernandez and Ameet Ghasi, and Women’s International Master Jovi Houska. With such a stellar line-up, the tournament is set to shine a spotlight on the growing prominence of chess across the UK.
The tournament will feature live commentary, daily updates, and big-screen match broadcasts in The Ryde School theatre, creating an immersive experience for spectators. With chess enjoying a surge in popularity, this is the perfect chance to witness world-class talent and engage with the game on a deeper level.
Free activities
There will be a programme of free activities designed to get everyone involved. From expert-led lessons and Q&A sessions, to casual games and live match screenings, there’s something for everyone, whether you’re new to chess or an experienced player. Facilities at Ryde School
There is a large and free car park at the school and it's very close to ferry services, and is on the main bus route. The tournament will be in the heated main sports hall. Snacks and drinks can be purchased in the Theatre before play where you can view the live commentary on a large screen.
