Traditional and enchanting thatched Vernon Cottage Tearoom, Tavern & Restaurant, Gift Shop & Tourist Information in Old Shanklin is one of the loveliest family-friendly fresh-food destinations on the Island and is home to the unique ‘Isle of Wight Shaped Scones’ and delicious ‘Old Shanklin Pie’. The beautiful sunny Tea and Beer Gardens have also won the ‘Wight In Bloom Best Commerical Garden on the IOW 2018', presented by gardening legend Alan Titchmarsh. Vernon Cottage serves traditional homemade food using local seasonal produce ALL day and evening and is renowned for its delicious local meat, fish and vegetarian/vegan dishes including its sensational ‘Old Shanklin Pie’, packed with succulent, slowly roasted lamb and its delicious Steak 'n Ale Pie. Every day, best quality joints of lamb are slowly roasted overnight for 16 hours to make the Vernon Cottage Old Shanklin Pie. Good traditional Island cooking at its best. Other favourites include tender local steaks and burgers, homemade Oven-Roasted Vegetable Lasagne, the Vernon Crab & Smoked Fishcakes and the spectacular Vernon Seafood Platter (recommended by The Independent).
You can also enjoy lovely Light Bites, Jacket Potatoes, home-baked Baguettes, doorstop Sandwiches & hearty Ploughman’s plus truly scrumptious home-made Strawberry Cream Teas featuring the delicious and unique 'Vernon Cottage Isle of Wight Shaped Scones’, gorgeous homemade cakes and decadent puddings including luxurious Sticky Toffee, Boozy Bailey’s Brownie and the outrageous ‘Vernon Volcano’.
Alternatively, you can simply relax with a fresh coffee, glass of wine, cold beer or share a jug of Pimms with friends. There is regular live music in the garden to enjoy and it is the meeting point for the spine-tingling Old Shanklin Ghost Walk at 8pm every Sunday. Vernon Cottage is the perfect place to begin or end your journey around the beautiful Shanklin Old Village.
Grade II listed Vernon Cottage has been lovingly restored over the past 10 years by owners Susan and Paul de Vere is one of the finest examples of ‘Cottage Orne’ (chocolate box style) on the Island. It was at the heart of the Island’s smuggling empire in the early 19th Century with a secret underground tunnel which runs all the way to Shanklin Chine complete with a beautiful resident ‘lady in pink’ ghost!
