Hadfield cottage is one of the oldest stone buildings in the historic village of Bonchurch. It is within the 18th Century Winterbourne estate. Winterbourne, is a grand, stone-built marine villa, built in 1839. It was rented by the author Charles Dickens and his family in 1859. It was here that the author wrote five chapters of his acclaimed novel, “David Copperfield”.
Dickens was one of a number of famous artists, writers, architects and other creatives from the UK, Europe and America who enjoyed the peace, quiet, climate and sea views that Winterbourne and the charming village of Bonchurch has to offer.
Hadfield Cottage is a five-minute walk to the coastal path and beaches. The path passes St Boniface Church, known locally as ‘the old church’ and regarded as the oldest church on the Isle of Wight . The stone built building was the model for original model train churches. Rebuilt in the 1070, The Old Church replaced the original church on this site circa 7th century. Also in Bonchurch is the Victorian ‘new’ St Bonifice church built in 1847.
The walk to the Town of Ventnor is only one mile with stunning views of the English Channel along the way. The coastal path continues on to the unique, Ventnor Botanic Gardens which benefits from a warm microclimate that enables outdoor tropical and semi-tropical planting alongside British favourites.
The Bonchurch Inn, known locally as ‘The Bonnie’ ia family-friendly pub and restaurant with outdoor seating in season. It’s signature dish is its ‘Life Changing Lasagna’ created by the pub’s Italian family. The Bonchurch Inn is open for lunches and dinner.
There are events in the Village and Ventnor throughout the year including the famous ‘Fringe Festival’ in July. On 7 June 2025, the island’s exciting, annual, ‘Round the Island Race’ featuring more than 1000 yachts of various classes, passes by Bonchurch and Ventnor. The Ventnor Carnival with activities over a number of days is a fun event for children and adults alike.
