About
Grants Cottage is a gorgeous, quintessential ‘chocolate box’ eighteenth century Listed thatched cottage in the heart of the pretty West Wight village of Calbourne. The cottage was completely renovated in 2016 and great care has been taken in choosing sumptuous soft furnishings and antiques in order to create a lovely, welcoming holiday home from home close to beaches, and stunning walking country. We are also dog-friendly, welcoming up to two, small well-behaved dogs at an extra charge of £25.00 per dog.
The cottage sleeps up to six guests comfortably in two large double bedrooms with super-king-size beds, and one twin bedroom. Luxurious Egyptian cotton bed-linen and White Company towels are included in the rental price. Guests only need to bring towels for the beach.
The pretty and cosy sitting room has a woodburner, games, books and a DVD library, ‘smart’ TV with freeview, and a DVD player. The large, oak-beamed farmhouse-style kitchen has an Aga which adds cosiness in winter months. There is also a lovely dining area; large, comfortable sofa; dishwasher, fridge/freezer, washing machine, tumble drier, electric hob, fan oven, electric toaster and microwave. For beach days we have provided a picnic rug and picnic basket complete with plastic picnic equipment, and a selection of children’s beach toys can be found in the garden shed.
There is a modern downstairs bathroom with shower over the bath, and an upstairs wc and washbasin. Basics such as loo paper, soaps, kitchen roll, washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets and laundry tablets are all included, as well as a lovely welcome pack containing local produce to greet guests on arrival. There is a stock of basics, such as salt, pepper, herbs, spices, sugar, tea, etc which are provided on a replace as you use basis. For our dog guests we supply a jar of dog treats, dog beds and feeding bowls.
Free wifi is provided, together with a desk area and printer available for guest’s use.
The large, enclosed dog-safe garden is a perfect sun-trap on warm days, and it also has a gate leading onto fields and a cricket pitch at the rear. A short stroll along the field will find the village swings and slides, and a communal tennis court. The terraced area, equipped with an outside dining table and chairs, is perfect for alfresco dining beside the roses and honeysuckle; and a lockable shed provides security for bicycles as well as housing the barbecue and garden chairs.
The village pub is about three minutes’ walk away, and the picture postcard Winkle Street is just around the corner.
Calbourne is a ten-minute drive from the ferry at Yarmouth, and under fifteen minutes to the town of Newport. The village of Freshwater boasts a fishmonger selling locally caught crab and lobster and a butcher, as well as a Co-Op selling Island produce and the gourmet ‘Cook’ range of frozen ready meals for guests who want to take a break from cooking. For golfers, the course at Freshwater is spectacularly situated, allowing stunning views over the Island and its coastlines.
Whether you are visiting the Island for a summer holiday, or a cosy winter break, Grants Cottage is the perfect base from which to explore the many attractions the Island has to offer.
We are proud to say that our guests, many of whom are now returning year after year, consistently award us five star reviews.
